What is Age Related Macular Degeneration ( ARMD) ?
ARMD is a degeneration of the macular region ( Central vision area) due to the phenomenon of aging. It is the leading cause of vision loss all over the world in people age over 50 years. This degeneration can be of two types:
- Dry ARMD: This is the most common form where tiny yellow cellular debris called drusens are deposited under the macula. As more drusens are deposited over a period of time, they cause thinning and atrophy of the macular region and contribute to vision loss. In few cases, this atrophy can lead to conversion to Wet form of ARMD. This form is generally managed by Nutritional supplements and regular eye checkups.
- Wet ARMD: This is the severe form of ARMD where blood vessels seep from underneath the retina and form a membrane ( Choroidal Neovascular Membrane). This causes fluid and blood collection underneath the retina which can quickly lead to central vision loss. This type needs intravitreal injection therapy.
